Seniors Track & Field League Campaign ’07

TEAM SECURES SECOND AT SUNNY SCUNTHORPE

Our season in Div 3EC continued with a trip to our 2nd match, hosted by Scunthorpe & Dist. A.C. at their home track, Quibell Park.

Athlete numbers were lower than the last match, only 20 in total; making the bus ride considerably quieter.  Couldn’t quite put my finger on why as I drove into the sunshine along the M180!

Selection changes to cover for a number of unfortunate last minute absentees placed extra burden on those making the trip, in an effort to declare as complete a team as possible.

A misty start quickly turned into a hot sunny afternoon.  I’m pleased to be able to report that a number of our athletes recorded notable performances in the field and on the track;

·         P.B. in the Ladies Hammer for Alex Shorey with 35:04m.

·         Another P.B. for Todd Marshall in the Men’s 200m with 22:30secs, (“AAA” & English School’s qualifying time).

·         A season’s best throw of 39:18m for Jay Parnaby in the Men’s Discus.

·         Superb powers of recovery from Dave Sprot, bouncing back up off the track and still finishing 3rd in the Men’s 400m hurdles with a very respectable time of 66:20secs, first outing in the event,.

·         Outright winner in both Men’s 800m & 1500m, Armande Bush.

·         Multi-eventing & middle distance running from Liz Wild, covering 6 events.

·         Amy Wilks, Chris Taylor, Jamie Bennett, Jules Russell, who all competed in 5 events.

·         Alex Shorey, Hayley Needes, Jay Parnaby, Matt Milsom, Mick Clift, Rose Paxman covering 4 events.

·         Admirably supported by Armande Bush, Craig Wolstenholme, Dave Sprot, Kathy Van Hee, Kelly Hewitson, Lizzie Adams, Mike Sprot, Todd Marshall …. oh, and this old man as well.

P.S.    Scunthorpe A.C. have kindly allowed us to publish some photographs of the day.  See the Photos section.

Special thanks also to HHS Officials who completed the team;

Timekeeper, Bob Taylor; Track Judge, Steve Marshall, and quite a busy day in the field with responsibility on 2 events for our team which comprised of Denise & Phil Needes and Malc Grace – with assistance from Craig W. Hayley N. John C. and Mick C. (in between competition).  Not forgetting the added assistance of an over-zealous field official with an out of date competition rule book [a hot day Denise, you stayed cool throughout].

Well done everyone; my thanks as Team Manager to you all!!

Result:  another commendable all round team performance & 2nd place, again finishing behind Kingston upon Hull.  Derby finished third again, but were pushed very close by the host club.

The pattern to this season appears set.  We are good enough to go straight through this league, if we maintain our position - but the next match is key.  Derby will have a far stronger team out on the 8th July at Grantham, when we switch to Sunday competition.

It is vital we show the club’s strength and give our athletes every opportunity to perform to their strengths………………by having MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED!!!  Everyone age 16 or over is eligible.

So please CHECK YOUR DIARIES, SUPPORT YOUR CLUB AND YOUR TEAM-MATES BY MAKING YOURSELF AVAILABLE ………. A N D   L E T   M E   K N O W ! !

ROUND THREE ON SUNDAY 8TH JULY AT GRANTHAM.
