YOUNG ATHLETES MATCH - Woodbourn Road 3rd June

Sheffield derby day.

The time had finally come for the local derby - Hallamshire vs. city of Sheffield.  It was a hot day so I had the additional task of constantly slapping sun cream on: shame some of the athletes got away, as a number were burnt come 5 pm.

The team ended up bit more “gappy” than ideal, but all the usual athletes turned out ready to give City a battle!

Harry Williams was not able to run again as he is very ill at the moment.  Despite that, he still wanted to be in the team and do some throwing.  Now that's my idea of commitment!!

The team did well in the 800m races, winning many of the events where we had athletes entered.

Special mentions especially to……..

Jamie Hobson who turned out and did a 1500m (long way to run in your first match).

Katherine Granger for doing the 3000m.  It was a tough race and the competition gave her a hard time.  They threatened to catch her now and then, but she fought them off and sailed to victory!!!

Well done to the girl's 4x300m relay team who scored a similar win (Fiona, you're not meant to start a race laughing!).  To be fair I was the one making her laugh.

You see, there weren't any other teams in the two above races.  Still, the girls enjoyed it and we scored maximum points.

Another well done to the U17 boy's 4 x 400m relay team.  It was close, but their long-standing unbeaten title still remains intact!

A big thank you to John Cox and Rick O’Toole, Simon Rippon, Steve Marshall and Denise Needes plus all the other helpers on the day who made it run smoothly.

Unfortunately, mainly due to a lack of support and turn out on the day, we came last -  getting hammered by City, Wakefield and Middlesbrough.

Better luck next time, guys!  Next match is at Jarrow on 24th June  (bring your mums and dads with you!).  Remember free lollies for everyone who comes on my coach!
